Aucilla River Paddling Trail
The Aucilla River flows 27 miles through Jefferson, Madison and Taylor Counties.The natural communities found on the Aucilla are Cypress swamps with hardwoods, which are teeming with wildlife. Wood ducks, otter, wild turkey, kingfisher, pileated woodpeckers, beaver, and song birds are common.
People have been attracted to the Aucilla River for over 12,000 years. Indians fished and hunted along the river extensively and State archeologists have found a treasure trove of prehistoric records along its shores (note: it is illegal to remove artifacts from Aucilla).
