The Walk of Champions

At Ichetucknee Springs State Park.

The Florida Champion Tree program, administered by the Florida Forest Service, identifies for research purposes the largest specimens of each tree species in the state of Florida.  Ichetucknee Springs State Park boasts two of these State Champions: Swamp Chestnut Oak and Common Persimmon.  Come visit each of these magnificent trees with Park Biologist Sam Cole.  This special program is a moderate-difficulty, off-trail hike in mostly level/slightly sloped terrains in shaded river hammock.  Sturdy hiking shoes, long pants, and other winter-appropriate clothing are highly recommended.  Water and insect repellent will be useful to bring along.  We will meet in front of the Environmental Education Center at the South Entrance of the park, off U.S. Highway 27.  This event is open for all ages and levels of experience.
