Experience Satchel’s Pizza–Now A Gainesville, FL Landmark!
Satchel’s Pizza has become a Gainesville, FL landmark. No, there’s no “historic” marker, but the place is pretty “hysterical”. I think of the place as Gainesville’s (and possibly all of North Florida’s) “South of the Border”, with the exception that it has great food to go along with the interesting scenery.
Located at 1800 NE 23rd Avenue in Gainesville, Satchel’s isn’t in the middle of town, but in a largely industrial location know for car repair shops and such. Parking can be limited, but after hours, there’s some parking next door. If you have a small car, be sure to take it–or if you’re a visitor, take a cab. And be prepared to wait! Lunch is less crowded and diners at dinner sometimes have to wait an hour for a table. However, there’s beer and wine in the back at Lightnin’ Salvage and plenty of things to see.
Satchel’s believes in filling your belly with good food. Generally, a small salad and a medium pizza (I like the “medium major”) will easily feed three. The pizza crusts at Satchel’s is crispy and light, and the salad dressing is some of the best around–you can even buy a bottle to take home.
Finally, a word about “citizen Satchel”, the owner and artist who created this place. Satchel treats his employees right, and it shows. He provides benefits to all his staff and clearly isn’t in the restaurant business to get rich. Just good food, lots of fun and smiles, and a good feeling when you leave!
