Apalachicola National Forest
Located in Florida's Panhandle, southwest of Tallahassee, the Apalachicola National Forest is well-known for its spectacular botanical diversity, including colorful pitcher plant prairies and one of the last extensive longleaf pine and wiregrass communities still in existence. Two wilderness areas will give you an idea what Florida looked like before "civilization" arrived.
Horses are permitted to ride anywhere on the forest, and may even go cross-country, except on hiking trails. There are miles of old woods roads that make excellent horse riding trails. There are no designated horse trails. Three new horse trailheads are available; River Run, Fisher Creek and Aenon Church Trailheads. All trailheads have a loose sandy surface. A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
Directions: River Road Trailhead - From Tallahassee, take US Highway 319 Crawfordville Hwy) south. Approximately 1 mile south of Capital Circle, turn right on River Road (paved road). Pavement ends at the power line. The trailhead is on the far side of the powerline. Surface is soft sand. Pull through parking spaces. Not signed.
Aenon Trailhead - From Tallahassee, take SR 20 west. Turn left at the light onto FR 370 (Aenon Church Road). Turn right onto FR 328 (the access road to Crowder Pit). Trailhead is on the left side. Surface is soft sand. Pull through parking spaces. Not signed.
Fisher Trailhead - From Tallahassee, take SR 373 south. Turn left on FR 362. Trailhead is on the left side of the road. Both FR 362 and the trailhead have a surface of soft sand. Pull through parking spaces. Not signed.
